Michigan Township Planning Commissions are responsible for a wide range of planning and regulatory functions. Their duties include but are not limited to:

• Reviewing Applications: Reviewing applications for site plans, special land use, and other development approvals to ensure they meet the township & zoning ordinance and other applicable laws.
• Master plan: Reviewing and updating the township master plan, which is a comprehensive plan for the community & growth and development 
• Zoning Ordinance: Reviewing and making recommendations to the township board regarding amendments to the zoning ordinance, which regulates how land and buildings can be used within the community 
• Public Input: Engaging with the public to gather input on planning matters
• Special Use Permits: Hearing and deciding special use permits 
• Development Plans: Reviewing and approving development plans for compliance with township ordinances, or making recommendations to the township board
• Subdivisions: Making recommendations on subdivisions, planned unit developments, and mixed-use planned unit developments 
• Public Hearings: Holding public hearings to receive and consider public comments regarding rezoning requests and other development applications
